To reduce costs, NASA has just rent a site that hasmarked the history of American aviation, airport federalMoffett, located in California. And not to anyone since it deals of Planetary Ventures, a subsidiary of Google, whose headquarters lies a few kilometres.
Thus, the Group has just sign a lease for an initialperiod of 60 years. For a total rent of 1.16 billiondollars, Google will benefit from a field of about 1,000acres, or more than 400 hectares, on which areavailable three hangars, air traffic control building, twotracks as well as a private golf course. Lease, however, includes the rehabilitation of the historic hangar 1.According to David Radcliffe, this hangar has long "wasconsidered one of the historical sites most threatenedthe United States".
Google will invest more than $ 200 million in therehabilitation work for 'the renovation and protectionof hangar 1', the rehabilitation of hangars 2 and 3, andthe creation of an educational institution where thepublic will be able to "explore the history of the siteand the role of technology in the history of SiliconValley".
These exceptional new premises allow PlanetaryVentures to carry out "research, development,Assembly and testing in the fields of aerospace, aviation, robotics and other emerging technologies".
On the side of NASA, beyond the consequent amountof rental, it considers that this operation it will saveapproximately 6.3 million dollars every year inmaintenance and operating costs.
