Facebook Chat, Skype, SnapChat or WhatsApp: lesssecure messaging services according to the EFF.
The independent U.S. agency that watches over thefreedom of expression on the web, the ElectronicFrontier Foundation (EFF) has just published a study. Itis the first that evaluates the security level contentexchanged via courier on mobile or internet. To do this,7 criteria were submitted to 39 services, includingencryption of content transfers, the ability to verify theidentity of the interlocutors or even the protection ofold messages when the credentials are stolen. The Agency highlighted that ChatSecure/Orbot, CryptoCat,Signal/RedPhone, Silent Phone, Silent Text andTextSecure meet all these criteria.
Among the most popular messaging services, onlyApple stands with 5 criteria on 7. Others are poorstudents. Indeed, Facebook Chat, Google Hangouts,Skype, Snapchat and WhatsApp fall only 2 criteria.Worse, AIM, BlackBerry Messenger, Viber and Yahoo!Messenger do reach only one criterion. The results thathave anything worry about or at least to disappoint.
These companies rely heavily on its services involved innotoriety. This study was what challenged users. Itremains to be seen if these great services will improvethe security of messages. Especially that giants such asYahoo!, AOL, or BlackBerry have the means to developmore secure products. Not to mention that the leadersof these groups have, since the revelations of EdwardSnowden, wanted to highlight the interest brought tothe protection data.
